BIG STORM - BIG FINISH

Saturday 28th Mar
During the last two days Mother Nature has thrown everything at us - Big storms, horizontal rain, vertical wind (?) with gusts up to 140 kmp, flying koalas, trees down and no power.  The ocean is HUGE - 7m swells, the rivers are bursting at the seams. AWESOME!!! I love a good storm. As a big finish to the WWF 60 Challenge I thought I'd do it all (except the running thing)  ... ride, walk swim and aqua yoga . My trusty K9 and I headed out thismorning weathered the storm and embraced nature - A day without nature is like a sandwich without filling - pointless!

Wonderful wildlife ...

Thursday 26th Mar
Bike ride and swim ... no surprises here! BUT, get this, along the coastal track a magnificent White-bellied Sea Eagle perched at head height in the Melaleuca - just checking out the seascape. Then, I was charged by a stampeding koala with attitude, managed to dodge him/her before it climbed it's way up a Manna Gum . BUT wait - theirs more - took a downhill corner a little to fast on my bike and nearly face-dived into an Eastern Grey Kangaroo - a big buff brute of a thing - it wouldn't have been to pretty for me had we collided. Gotta love nature and all that it has to offer. To quote Aristotle 'In all things of nature, there is something of the marvellous' It was certainly a marvellous morning!

It's all down hill.

Wednesday 25th Mar
Up early and rode to work ... for those of you that know me might say things like 'It's all down hill Julie" In my defence 'What go's down must go up' Some famous astronaut once said 'One small downhill is one giant uphill for mankind' So, It all counts. This was followed by extreme dog walking and more mowing - If only I had a pedometer I'd be smashing records!

Did I mention ...

Wednesday 25th Mar
Did I mention riding to the beach (again) and having a swim (again) Well today (24th) I did my second most favorite thing ever - rode on the beach !!! How is this possible (I  hear you ask?) With the aide of fat tyres, knowledge of beach access and careful calculation of low tides - it was made possible. This (blow and behold) gave me the inspiration to come home and cut the grass !!! -I know right?

Sparkling ...

Monday 23rd Mar
By jingo it's HOT! (Nearly 30 degrees) I'm not sweating - I'm sparkling! A couple of hours fluffing around in the vegie garden (time to say ta-ta tomatoes'), a bike ride to the beach to locate a dead whale (a sad start to the annual Northern migration) and my usual 'Aqua Yoga' (Stephs not here cracking the whip, so it was a short one) have put me back on track from yesterdays 'sitting' . Keep watching the ocean peeps - it's 'Whale time'

Sitting ...

Monday 23rd Mar
Today was sitting. NOT because I overdid it with the 12,000 odd steps BUT had a long car trip to get back home. So ... sitting in a car OUTSIDE for a good part of the day counts right ?  Was it not Jane Austen that said "To sit in the car on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment" (Who is Verdure you might ask ... I was thinking the same thing!)

Alert the media - Call Dr. Sara

Saturday 21st Mar
Alert the media and call Dr. Sara! Not because I need a medic, but because I did what she requested of me - over 10,000 steps a day!!! Woo Hoo! Admittedly this is the first ever day in over 20 years that I have done over 10,000 steps - but better late than never! Man, I hope she's proud.  Also, had a snorkel and came face to face with a gnarly Thorn fish and some rather cool stripey Zebra Fish.

Making up for bad behavior ...

Friday 20th Mar
OK ... I'll admit that I was feeling rather guilty about the 240 Minutes of WAE AGM sipping wine with my mates - so today I physically tortured myself in a bid for redemption (been watching Survivor) Just over 5000 steps of hard slog along the bush tracks and beach, Ocean swimming and Bodyboarding. A good slice of half a day pushing it to the limit. I felt like Rocky Balboa making my way from the ocean to the Squeaky Beach car park. "Every champion was a contender who refused to give up"  (Just to quote the man himself!

Swim with a shark !

Thursday 19th Mar
Alot of sitting today ... sitting and driving and sitting - but finally managed to clock up 60 Mins with a walk to the beach for a swim. The tide was so far out we caught a bus before we caught our first wave. A flop around in the ocean with Sugarpops and Gabby saw a hasty exit when a inquisitive Banjo shark took interest in our tootsies and took chase in the shallows. According to the WWW Banjo sharks are harmless bottom dwelling rays endemic to Southern-Australia ...

300 Mins - Smashing all records !

Thursday 19th Mar
300 Mins Today !!! Exceeding all expectations, kicking goals and smashing all records ! 60 Minutes of the usual bike riding and swimming - then 240 Minutes of indulging in home made pastries, sipping wine, and general co-horting with the gals at our WAE (Women against everything) AGM - In my defense we were sitting outdoors - battling against the prospect of Ross River Fever from the over-friendly Mozzies and anaphylaxis from a very erratic European Wasp. (OK, OK - I'll just count the bike ride and swim)

Bike, Beach and beautiful blue socks

Tuesday 17th Mar
I feel I'm getting  predictable ... especially on busy days (like today)  BUT in my defense ... I have never seen ANYONE jogging and smiling at the same time. A bike ride  through the Eucalypt forest (smelling good after 6mm of rain) and 267 freestyle strokes in the Betka River (Yes! I'm a counter!) However ... today was abit different BECAUSE I was sporting my new WWF Humpback Whale socks !!! Woo Hoo (I hear you say ... I now right?) Very excited to receive a fundraising reward from the WWF.

Kokoda Track - Plant a tree

Monday 16th Mar
Headed out this morning with my trusty K9 companion along the 'Old Betka Track' Two small contradictions here ... the track wasn't just 'Old' it was ancient, and secondly one would hardly call it a track. I would liken my bike ride terrain to that of the famed Kokoda Track ... minus the leaches,  but with plenty of the  blood, sweat and tears. After recovering from the Kokoda ordeal I thought it necessary to plant ... trees (4) and Broccoli (12) Like Costa once said 'If you don't plant it ... It will definitely not grow!" Such wise words.

Assisted the pedals ...

Sunday 15th Mar
I assisted the pedals on my e-bike this morning (they couldn't have done it without me) Though the forest, where I near met with a lyrebird head-on, then along the heathland, where Jackie Lizards played 'chicken' with my speed, stealth and agility. (I wish!) Destination Betka Beach for a swim ... some say it's not about the destination, it's about the journey - I beg to differ !

A Solor Power beach walk

Saturday 14th Mar
Up early this morning for a 3 1/2 Km Soar power beach walk. How does this differ form a 'Power walk'?  (I hear you ask) Well ... a Solar power walk can only be conducted during daylight hours and preferably not during overcast or inclement weather. As the famous Steve Martin said 'A day without sunshine, is like, you know night!'

Aqua-Aerobics for those chicken-wing flaps

Friday 13th Mar
Is 8am an early start? It is when its only 13 degrees outside. It was a little warmer in the water - 14 degrees. Me and my life coach Stephanie-swim-a-lot-Mew  tackled our chicken wing flaps this morning with various Aqua aerobics and freestyle sprints. Did a lot of Dolphining in the shallow water and got my head tangled in some estuary weed - a close call with Pelican Itch! If this wasn't enough I then headed out on my bike with my trusty K9 (Kip) - got shat on by a Pied Cormorant while looking at the Ocean which is something that I would recommend avoiding at all costs. (The Cormorant business that is) A good workout for the daily challenge!

Is River Yoga a real thing?

Thursday 12th Mar
This morning saw a 65min  hard-core River Yoga workout. Is River Yoga a real thing I hear you ask? I can tell you now it is, as the following is building. Doing the 'Downward dog' underwater is a lot harder than you might think and as for the 'Mountain'  - Hmmmm, lets just say I may have ingested a few fat prawns and the odd puffer fish. Jigar Gor once said 'Yoga is not about touching your toes, it's about what you learn on the way down' Well, I can tell you this morning I learnt a lot about sand crabs and estuary perch !

Kicking goals with Corgi's

Wednesday 11th Mar
33 degrees today. Didn't need to do much to work up a sweat!   HUGE thanks to my two new sponsors this arvo - Julie (great name) and Yahtzee Corgi - these donations through balled the play from midfield to within striking distance of the goal! My first K9 donation. To all my other four-legged friends out there ...Yahtzee gets the honor of my bio-pic. So ... pick yer game up Rover, Blue, Spot and Daisy!

Surf, Salmon and Snails

Wednesday 11th Mar
Started early with a ride to the beach and a body surf with fellow ocean swimmer and Iron woman Steph. Nearly got taken out by a shoal of Salmon ... which would have been hard to explain the the paramedics. Home to wippersnip the vegie garden grass ... gets abit messy when you hit the odd snail. Then planted 26 Cauliflower seedling and picked another 5Kg of Tommy Toe Tomatoes. Was it Paul Newman that once said 'Passata is bellissimo  with home grown' (It probably wasn't him that said that, but I bet he wished he did!)

Leonardo DiCaprio, 2284 Cans and Bottles and a bunch of 'Friends'

Tuesday 10th Mar
Phew ! Helped the Friends of Mallacoota infeed 2284 Cans and Bottles into the reverse vending machine. How long does 2284 Cans and Bottles take to infeed by 6 volunteers? The answer is 2 Hours !!! Way more fun than going to the gym! As Leonardo DiCaprio said " Plastic pollution is a global issue: killing wildlife, contaminating our oceans and waters, and lasting far longer than it is used!" And Leo should know because he was on the Titanic  and the Beach!

Is an electric bike a real bike ?

Monday 9th Mar
Is an electric bike a real bike ? Just to be clear, I was using pedal assist - so I guess the answer is YES ! Early start and ride (the said electric bike) through the bush with Kip (our dog)  to Betka Beach. Here we enjoyed an early dip in the tannin rich waters of Betka River. The sunshine filtered through the brown  liquid creating great columns of filtered amber light. Beautiful ! Was it Mr. Dilmah that once said 'If my tea had the colour of tannin waters I would be a happy man!'

OCEAN SWIM WITH A GNARLY SHOREBREAK

Sunday 8th Mar
Headed out this morning and tackled a body surf with my BBF Stephanie Mew ... the waves were gnarly and the sandbank contributed to a heavy, hollow break. Another pod of Dolphins ... It's a tough gig! As Karen Blixen said "The cure for anything is Saltwater - Sweat, tears or the Sea"

SANDY FEET AND CRABS

Saturday 7th Mar
Early morning walk along the beach before the light rain started. Then ... because I was already wet and the ocean was calling had a dip ... avoided a close call with a couple of sand crabs - As someone once said "All good things are wild and free!' I wish I had have said that! (Well I kind of just did!)

Blue Tongue Lizard and a pod of Dolphins

Friday 6th Mar
Got into the ocean today with my Boogie Board and caught a few good rides ... A pod of Inshore Bottlenose dolphins shared the waves on their way past. Helped the fellas stack a load of fire wood and saved a Blue Tongue Lizard from a flock of hungry Magpies ...

20KM Beach Clean

Thursday 5th Mar
Today we upped the anti and did a 5hr mission.  Along the pristine coastline of Croajingolong Nation Park collecting Marine Debris (as part of Sea Shepherd Marine Debris Campaign) We experienced the full kaleidoscope of Autumn weather - Rain, Winds, Sunshine and Humidity. Collected a ship-load of ocean flotsam and jetsam. Enjoyed every minute of being in the great outdoors!

The great outdoors blew me away ...

Monday 9th Feb
The great outdoors always blows me away ... but yesterday it was literal. The wind came through and moved the outdoor furniture down the paddock, the apples on the tree were airborne and as far as the washing was concerned ... two pegs per sock!!!

GOANNA in training

Wednesday 4th Feb
OK ... So I'm gearing up for the March Earth Hour Challenge ... does chasing a Goanna from the chook cage with a plastic rake qualify as training ? The girls were pretty vocal - not sure if they were still in panic mode if they were cheering me on! Either way - I got out in the great outdoors :)

2 Dogs …

Tuesday 3rd Feb
Got moving reasonably early today (is 8 am reasonably early?) … took the dogs for a nice jaunt on the beach - surf breaking, seagulls squawking sunshine warming the nippy 12 degree morning … is it still summer ? What an amazing planet earth is 👍
